Overcoming Disgust with a Heart of Grace

1000005190

Disgust is a strong emotional response. It can come from something we see, hear, or experience, especially when it goes against our values or feels deeply unpleasant. While this emotion is natural, the Bible teaches us how to respond in a way that reflects God’s heart.

What the Bible Says About Our Hearts and Reactions

The Bible calls us to look beyond our immediate reactions and examine our hearts.

1 Samuel 16:7 says:

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Sometimes what we feel disgust toward on the outside may not reflect the full picture. God sees deeper and He calls us to do the same.

Colossians 3:8 says:
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

This reminds us to guard our responses, even when we feel strong emotions.

Understanding Why Disgust Happens

Disgust often comes from:

  • Things that feel morally wrong.
  • Situations that are uncomfortable or offensive.
  • Encounters that challenge our personal boundaries.

While the feeling itself may arise quickly, we are responsible for how we respond.

Responding with Wisdom and Grace

Instead of reacting harshly, we can:

  • Pause before responding
  • Pray for understanding and self-control.
  • Separate the action from the person.
  • Respond with kindness rather than judgment.

Ephesians 4:32 says:
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Even when something feels unpleasant, God calls us to remain kind and compassionate.

God Is With Us in Every Emotion

No matter what we feel, even about strong emotions like disgust, we can bring it to God.

Hebrews 13:5 says:
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

God is with us in every reaction, helping us to respond in a way that reflects His love.

In Conclusion:

Disgust may come naturally, but it does not have to lead to harshness or judgment. With God’s guidance, we can respond with grace, wisdom, and compassion while allowing His love to shape even our strongest reactions.
