John chapter 21 gives us a beautiful picture of the love, patience, and restoration of Jesus after His resurrection. The disciples had experienced fear, disappointment, and uncertainty, yet Jesus met them right where they were and reminded them that their purpose was still alive.
Back to the Familiar
After everything that had happened, several of the disciples returned to fishing. It was familiar territory for them. But after fishing all night, they caught nothing.
How often do we return to what feels comfortable when we are uncertain about what comes next? Yet even in those moments, Jesus still comes looking for us.
Jesus on the Shore
As morning came, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize Him at first. He told them to cast the net on the right side of the ship, and suddenly the net was filled with fish.
This miracle reminded them who He was. Jesus was showing them that without Him, their efforts would always come up empty, but with Him, there is provision and direction.
A Personal Restoration
One of the most touching moments in this chapter is when Jesus speaks to Peter. After Peter had denied Him three times before the crucifixion, Jesus now asked him three times, “Lovest thou me?”
Jesus was not trying to shame Peter. He was restoring him.
Each time Peter answered, Jesus responded with instructions:
Feed my lambs.”
“Feed my sheep.”
This showed that Peter still had a purpose, even after failure.
Following Jesus
Jesus reminded Peter that following Him would require commitment and sacrifice. Then He simply said:
“Follow me.”
That message still speaks to believers today. No matter our past mistakes, Jesus still calls us to follow Him faithfully.
In conclusion, John chapter 21 reminds us that Jesus restores, provides, and continues to call His people forward. Failure is not the end when placed in the hands of Christ. He meets us with grace, gives us purpose, and invites us to continue following Him.
Even after disappointment, there is still work to do and hope ahead.
